Herpes is the common term for infections caused by two types of a viral disease. The two types of the virus are Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1, and Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2, known as HSV-1 and HSV-2, respectively. The most common form of herpes infection is known as oral herpes, and results in blisters, called fever blisters, or cold sores, that typically occur around the face or mouth. The less common form of Herpes infection is known as genital herpes, and is a prominent sexually transmitted infection.
Both forms of herpes share a similar viral cycle. Blisters and sores may appear on the affected area (oral or genital) for a period usually between 2 and 21 days, followed by a period of remission. Both forms of the herpes virus are easily transmitted through skin to skin contact with blisters or sores, or contact with bodily fluids of an infected individual.
Due to the ease of transmission, it is very important to take the necessary precautions to prevent infection when engaging in sexual activity with a partner who may be infected. Barrier protection methods, such as condoms, are the most reliable means of protection during sexual activity, but it should be noted that these methods only reduce the risk of infection, and are not able to prevent it entirely.
At this time there is no cure for either type of herpes virus, although there are treatments available. Typical treatments include antiviral medication to help shorten the duration of blister outbreaks. Antiviral medication is available in both oral and topical forms, and many are available in generic forms that can be purchased over the counter. Vaccines designed to prevent the transmission of herpes viral infection are currently undergoing clinical trials.
Herpes is a serious sexually transmitted disease that affects millions of individuals around the planet. At this present time, there are no known herpes cures. Only education and the practice of safer sex can protect people from this dreadful sexually transmitted disease. Doctors and scientists encourage people to take a herpes test if they begin experiencing any of the symptoms listed above.
